Proposition {eight}

So this semester I am talking a Marriage and Family class. We talk a lot about marriage and society and the effects and different trends. So with the current events in California with Proposition 8, we are really looking into what effects would happen if it didn't pass on the 4th. The effects spread far beyond California. This is a national issue. It will trickle down and effect everyone.
Just this morning Connecticut judges made same-sex marriage legal there as well.
We see effects from this in Massachusetts. The Catholic adoption agencies have been shut down because they were against placing children in homes with same-sex parents. They could either shut down or be forced to place children in homes and situations that they didn't agree with.
Universities who disagree with same-sex marriages, such as BYU and other private religious schools could loose accreditation. Children will be taught about same-sex marriage and relations in public schools. It is going to cost a lot of money. Lawsuits will be popping up all over the place.
This is a huge turning point in American society. If Californians fail to pass Prop 8, chances are that other states would follow suit...such as Conneticut. As seen in other issues, such as No-fault divorces (which essentially make divorces rediculously easy to get) California was the first state to pass the law in 1970. In just a few years every state had passed the law, except for New York, who currently doesn't reccognize no fault divorce. This is bound to happen with same-sex marriage as well.

The funny thing is all this has been done by judges. The people of California voted previously about an amendment and it passed by 61% to keep marriage between a man and a woman . Then 4 out of 7 judges decided to disreguard the peoples voice and overturn it to make same-sex marriage legal.

We need to come together and stop this before it gets out of hand. If you would like more information here are some websites.

Project Marriage has been put together by the LDS, Catholic, and other evangleical churches to make people aware of what Prop 8 is and why it is so important to VOTE YES on PROP 8 November 4th if you are from California.

Please talk to people you know, educate people about what this is and why it is important. Get involved to protect marriage as a sacred instiution between a man and a woman. If you are outside of California, but want to help, there are call stations set up through wards and churches to help inform everyone in California and encourage voting. Take a few hours a week between now and November 4th to stand up for what you believe in.

I just found out about this today and I can't believe this is happening..even though I find it hard to believe that they could enforce Gay marriage and rights in states like Texas, it's scary that it has happened in several states already! I am all for doing something about it!

Nice eloquent job bringing up the issues, Linds. When is the New York Times coming over for your editorial? :) Seriously, this is a really huge issue, and not one to be taken lightly. Way to voice your opinion sister!

Thank you for standing up for what is right. This issue is really starting to sadden me. It's incredible to think what great hold that satan has on the hearts of people. Some people may say that we are not being tolerant, but what is really happening if we let marriage be redefined, is that we will experience less tolerance toward us and our religious beliefs, as is clear in the case of the Catholic adoption agency being shut down. Our freedoms to practice our own beliefs are being sneakily taken from us.

It is very sad that the judges overturned the earlier ammendment. I remember walking with my mom door to door when I was in college trying to convince people to vote yes on the previous ammendment to protect marriage. This is so scary. My dad and I were talking about the possible ramifications of temple marriage in CA if this passed as well. Would those wanting to be married in a LA temple have to go get married by the courts and THEN go get sealed??? It is all so scary.

Yeah, what I hear is that either the church will lose tax exemption and other benefits from the Federal Govn't, because they would not perform same sex marriages.... they could have a lot of lawsuits on their hands, and those sealings performed in the temple would not be considered lawful, so you would have to get married and then sealed. This is a collision course between Church and State.
